Nanosys To Speed Nanotechnology Product Development With New Hires - News Item

Nanosys Inc. has hired two new executives to aid the company's transition from nanotechnology R&D to manufactured products. Dr. Michael S. Barnes joined the company as vice president of technology development systems, and Matthew B. Bigge joined the company as director of corporate development. Both positions are new additions to Nanosys's executive team.

The new hires come as Nanosys is reinforcing its business and manufacturing capabilities following a series of recent corporate deals with companies including Intel, Matsushita Electric Works, SAIC and others. Nanosys is a leader in the development of systems powered by nanotechnology - the use of nanometer-sized materials to develop new technologies and revolutionary new applications.

Dr. Barnes was formerly vice president of engineering and chief technical officer for Applied Materials Etch Product Business Group. He brings to Nanosys expertise in the development and commercialization of capital equipment and processing for semiconductor manufacturing. Prior to Applied Materials, Dr. Barnes was senior director of the 300mm product development effort at Lam Research Corporation. Dr. Barnes also has expertise in leading-edge semiconductor process technology research and development from his tenure at IBM's East Fishkill Facility. He is an inventor on over 50 patents. Dr. Barnes received his Ph.D., M.S. and B.S. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Michigan. He was recently selected as a member of the National Research Council's Plasma Science Committee.

Mr. Bigge comes to Nanosys with a strong track record of technology commercialization as an entrepreneur, innovator and investor. As the co-founder and COO of MILCOM Technologies, Mr. Bigge led the acquisition and commercialization of over $1.5 billion in technology ranging from wireless to software and semiconductors. He was instrumental in applying that technology to create and found over 10 product companies such as Triton Network Systems (TNSI) and Meshnetworks. Mr. Bigge led corporate partnerships with Fortune 500 companies such as Motorola, Nortel, and Xilinx, and has deep knowledge and experience within the defense industry, having structured partnerships with Lockheed Martin, ITT Industries, Raytheon and several other corporations and federal entities. Mr. Bigge is a former Army Ranger with a distinguished record as an infantry officer in the 10th Mountain Division. He received his MBA from Harvard Business School and B.S. from Georgetown University.

"As Nanosys continues to move toward product manufacturing, it's critical that we leverage the top talent from the traditional semiconductor world in addition to the new world of semiconductor nanomaterials," said Calvin Chow, co-founder and CEO of Nanosys. "Mike Barnes brings a tremendous background to the company in the transition of new semiconductor technologies through manufacturing. At the same time, we are responding to accelerated partnership interest over the past 12 months by adding Matt Bigge's incredible track record to our business and corporate development team."
