American Chemical Society Wins Two Prestigious PROSE Awards

The American Chemical Society (ACS), the world's largest scientific society, has won two prestigious PROSE awards for excellence in scholarly publishing.

ACS Nano, edited by Dr. Paul S. Weiss, received the Association of American Publishers' Award for Best New Journal in the category of Science, Technology, and Medicine. ACS Nano was launched in August 2007 and publishes cutting-edge original research in the areas of nanoscience and nanotechnology.

ACS was also recognized as the winner of eProduct/Best Website or Platform. This prestigious award recognizes ACS for the recent launch of a dynamic new Web delivery platform, now hosting the Society's 34 peer-reviewed research journals. The Association of American Publishers confers the PROSE awards – shorthand for Professional and Scholarly Excellence – annually. They are highly prized in the world of publishing.

The award in the Website or Platform category recognizes the combined work of the ACS Publications Division, the Society's Information Technology (IT) division, and Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS), the global leader in chemical information and repository of comprehensive databases of research in chemistry and related sciences. The innovative technology recognized by this award allows for the linking of ACS journal articles directly to SciFinder®, the research discovery tool that provides scientists access to CAS databases. ACS journal readers who are subscribers to SciFinder® benefit from the combined integrated services now available.

The ACS Publications Division's new journal Web delivery platform delivers enhanced searching and browsing capabilities, better user navigation, and unique connections and pathways to other ACS Web properties such as Chemical & Engineering News (ACS' weekly newsmagazine) and the ACS Paragon Plus Environment, in addition to SciFinder®. A Flash-based demonstration available from the ACS Publications Website at http://pubs.acs.org/flashdemo showcases many of the features and benefits of the new site.

"The American Chemical Society is proud to be the recipient of the 2008 PROSE award for eProduct/Best Website or Platform," said Madeleine Jacobs, CEO and Executive Director of ACS. "The award acknowledges the ACS for the technology innovation inherent in the integrated offerings of both our Publications Division's new journals Web delivery platform and the Web edition of CAS SciFinder® that was introduced in 2008. It recognizes as well the Society's focus on providing an enhanced Web presence via www.acs.org and the social networking capabilities of the ACS Member Network."

Jacobs added that the Society is "similarly delighted that ACS Publications and Professor Paul Weiss received top honors for ACS Nano. That recognition further underscores how effectively the ACS is serving as the indispensible professional and information resource for its members and other chemistry-related practitioners."
