Analog Devices Introduces Low-Noise MEMS Microphone

Analog Devices (ADI), a provider of high-performance semiconductors for applications in signal processing, has launched a new low noise MEMS microphone, the ADMP504, for professional video and audio conferencing and industrial applications.

The ADMP504 has a thin surface-mount package of 3.35x2.50x0.88 mm. The MEMS microphone delivers an equivalent input noise of 29-dBA EIN or an SNR of 65-dBA, which is advantageous for high definition and far-field audio-capture applications. The ADMP504 provides a high power-supply-rejection of 70 dBV and an extended frequency response ranging up to 20 kHz. The high PSR enables better power trace routing and placement for microphones and the extended frequency response enables a natural and well-balanced sound.

The ADMP504 MEMS microphone has a -38 dBV sensitivity that allows it to be used for discrete signal chain components and a range of codecs. The microphone requires a 1.6 V to 3.3 V supply voltage and typically consumes less than 180 µA. Analog Devices' ADMP504 microphone features wideband frequency response and a high far-field sound capture capability for high-definition audio recording applications.

The director and principal analyst for MEMS and sensors at IHS, Jérémie Bouchaud stated that ADI's MEMS microphones have gained acceptance for media tablets and smartphones.

In 2010, the world-wide MEMS microphone shipments were 704 million, which increased by 82% to 1.3 billion units in 2011, fuelled by the demand for handsets.
