HRL Laboratories Issued Its 500th Patent

HRL Laboratories, LLC, announced today that it has obtained its 500th patent from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. An independent research and development company located in Malibu, CA, HRL reached this milestone in less than 12 years in operation.

Organized in December 1997 as a limited liability company from the former Hughes Research Laboratories, Inc., HRL began inventing with a clean slate. The company's first patent under its new name was issued on September 12, 2000. In the last year, HRL was awarded an average of six patents each month.

The landmark 500th patent was issued for the invention titled, "Oriented Self-Location of Microstructures with Alignment Structures," an invention that provides for a novel way of fabricating electronic components.

"This milestone is representative of the technical depth within HRL," said Dr. William Jeffrey, HRL's President and CEO. "Our success is due to the talent of our technical staff. They have made HRL a world-class research company enabling technologies critical to our owners, customers and the nation."

HRL's 200th patent was issued in May of 2005; its 300th patent in January 2007; and the company's 400th patent was issued in May 2008.
