Carl Zeiss Launches Educational Website About Latest Techniques in Fluorescence Imaging

Carl Zeiss, a leading provider of microscopy solutions for a variety of research, clinical and industrial applications, launches the educational website www.zeiss.com/campus during this year's Society for NeuroScience Annual Meeting. Developed in collaboration with the renowned imaging expert and online teaching pioneer Mike Davidson from Florida State University, the website will be a comprehensive and independent resource to learn about the latest techniques in Fluorescence Imaging.

Fluorescence microscopy has an exciting future as new techniques for high resolution imaging like Localization Microscopy and Structured Illumination Microscopy are being developed. For example, Localization Microscopy (PALM) will make it possible to reach close to molecular resolution down to the 25 nm range. Carl Zeiss is actively working at the forefront of development for systems for high resolution imaging. The introduction of first products is targeted for end of 2009 after the systems' performance has reached the quality demanded of all Carl Zeiss microscopes. During the next year, content on high resolution techniques like PALM will be added to the Online Campus website.

The Carl Zeiss MicroImaging Online Campus is an available resource for scientists and students. Review articles and interactive flash animations on the Online Campus website allow researchers to quickly learn about the various techniques. Animations artfully combine theory, technology and application of fluorescence techniques. Website content is developed by Mike Davidson and is intended to be an independent review of the methods and technologies. In addition, key scientists who are leaders in fluorescence imaging have already agreed to contribute content to the Online Campus.

At www.zeiss.com/campus researchers can also find application image galleries, are invited to share their own applications in an Application Library and can visit the Reference Library to find key review articles on the most important topics in fluorescence microscopy. At the launch of www.zeiss.com/campus, the site includes the most comprehensive review of light sources for fluorescence imaging to be found anywhere and explains the technique of structured illumination for creating optical sections.

"Training our employees and customers has always been a key priority for Carl Zeiss. Therefore, the Online Campus is a logical step for us. Mike Davidson is a pioneer in online teaching and one of the most renowned imaging experts in the world. We are very pleased that Mike Davidson and Florida State University have agreed to partner with us," states Dr. Bernhard Ohnesorge, Vice President and General Manager of the BioSciences Division at Carl Zeiss MicroImaging.
