EPA Approves Commercialization of Stacked-Cup Carbon Nanotubes in the US

Pyrograf Products has announced that the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has approved the production and supply of Pyrograf-III stacked-cup carbon nanotubes, also called as carbon nanofibers, for commercial purposes in the US.

The consent order from the EPA now allows Pyrograf Products to supply its carbon nanofiber to industries including energy storage, polymer, automotive and aerospace, in the US.

In order to get the EPA approval, Pyrograf Products has taken efforts including fulfilling the reporting requirements of the local EPA, taking part in the agency’s voluntary Nanomaterials Stewardship Program, and filing two pre-manufacturing notices (PMNs). This procedure illustrates the company’s dedication to responsible production and utilization of its products.

The patented Pyrograf-III is an inexpensive, highly graphitic stacked-cup carbon nanotube with attributes almost identical to the theoretical graphite values in nearly every performance characteristic. It has high purity with minimum metal concentrations and more than 99.9% of fibrous material.

According to David Burton, who serves as General Manager at Pyrograf Products, the company’s clients have been closely observing the status of the company’s PMNs to slate the introduction of products based on the carbon nanofiber. The approval now gives the company the ability to freely react to opportunities for new applications, he added.
