SVIC Makes Second Investment in Cambrios

Cambrios Technologies Corporation, the leader in silver nanowire-based solutions for the transparent conductor markets, today announced a second round of strategic investment by Samsung Venture Investment Corporation (SVIC) of $10M to help fuel the company’s growth. Cambrios had previously received an investment of $5M from SVIC in 2011.

Water Drop Folds Silicon Nitride Sheets into Microscopic Cubes, Pyramids

Researchers from the University of Twente in the Netherlands have taken the precise art of origami down to the microscopic scale. Using only a drop of water, the scientists have folded flat sheets of silicon nitride into cubes, pyramids, half soccer-ball-shaped bowls and long triangular structures that resemble Toblerone chocolate bars – an omnium-gatherum of geometric objects, which are almost too tiny to see with the naked eye.

Plasmonic Nanobubbles Can Detect and Kill Only Cancer Cells

The first preclinical study of a new Rice University-developed anti-cancer technology found that a novel combination of existing clinical treatments can instantaneously detect and kill only cancer cells — often by blowing them apart — without harming surrounding normal organs. The research, which is available online this week Nature Medicine, reports that Rice’s “quadrapeutics” technology was 17 times more efficient than conventional chemoradiation therapy against aggressive, drug-resistant head and neck tumors.
