Background
Dr. Roger Narayan is a Professor in the Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering
at the University of North Carolina and North Carolina State University.
He is an author of over one hundred publications as well as several book chapters
on nanoscale and microscale processing, characterization, and modeling of biological
and biomedical materials. He currently serves as an editorial board member for
several academic journals, including as editor-in-chief of Materials Science
and Engineering C: Materials for Biological Applications (Elsevier). Dr. Narayan
has also edited several books, including Biomedical Materials (Springer), Printed
Biomaterials: Novel Processing and Modeling Techniques for Medicine and Surgery
(Springer), Advances in Biomedical and Biomimetic Materials (Wiley), and Advances
in Bioceramics and Porous Ceramics (Wiley). In addition, he has served as chair
of The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society Biomaterials Committee and as
editorial committee chair of Materials and Processes for Medical Devices (ASM
International). He has organized workshops and symposia for the American Ceramic
Society, the Society for Biomaterials, and the Materials Research Society.
Dr. Narayan has received several honors for his research activities, including
the University of North Carolina Jefferson-Pilot Fellowship in Academic Medicine,
the University of North Carolina Junior Faculty Development Award, the North
Carolina State University Sigma Xi Faculty Research Award, the National Science
Faculty Early Career Development Award, the Office of Naval Research Young Investigator
Award, and The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society Structural Materials
Division JOM Best Paper Award. He has been elected as Fellow of ASM International
and Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
