Background
Dr. Shenhar received his BSc in Chemistry and Computer Science in 1995 and his PhD in Chemistry in 2002 (both from the Hebrew University). After postdoctoral research in Chemistry and Polymer Science at the University of Massachusetts – Amherst (as a Fulbright scholar) and in Electrical Engineering at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology (as a Zeff fellow), he joined the Institute of Chemistry at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 2006 as a Senior Lecturer (equivalent to an Assistant Professor in the US).
Research in the Shenhar group focuses on the development of self-assembly strategies for the organization of nano-materials, and the incorporation of self-assembly in advanced fabrication techniques. Central to their approach is the utilization of block co-polymers as organization matrixes, since these materials feature a variety of useful, periodic nanoscale morphologies through spontaneous phase separation.
A particular emphasis is given to polymer-mediated assembly of inorganic nanoparticles into morphologically controlled hierarchical structures. Controlling the morphology of nanoparticle ensembles enables fine-tuning their collective properties, which is important for a variety of applications, from microelectronics to diagnostics.
