Background
Having an original background in Metallurgy Prof Akid graduated with an honours
degree in Chemistry from Birkbeck College, London and a PhD in environment-sensitive
fracture at Sheffield University. Working as an Assistant Director of Research
in the Structural Integrity Research Institute of the University of Sheffield,
he began an intensive investigation on the role of environment and loading variables
on the fatigue resistance of materials. Prof Akid was awarded a Senior Research
Fellowship with the Royal Academy of Engineering working closely with CORUS
(formerly British Steel) investigating the fatigue and corrosion fatigue performance
of offshore structural steels.
During this time he founded the Centre
for Corrosion Technology, a centre working with local, regional and national
industries investigating varied aspects of corrosion damage. In 1999 he moved
to Sheffield Hallam where he works closely with staff of both the Materials
Engineering Research Institute and the Biomedical Research Centre. Currently
he is the co-ordinator of the EPSRC, UK-based, network on Electrochemical Scanning
Probe Techniques.
