New Process to Create Tiny Fiber Structure at the Microscale

Scientists at the U.S. Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory attacked a tangled problem by developing a new technique to grow tiny "hairy" materials that assemble themselves at the microscale.

Analog/mixed-signal foundry group X-FAB Silicon Foundries today announced its collaboration with Belgian-based micro- and nanoelectronics research center imec to offer multi-project wafer runs through imec’s EUROPRACTICE IC Service for X-FAB’s 0.18 micrometer SOI HV process (XT018) and a junction-isolated HV process (XH018).

Flexible, layered materials textured with nanoscale wrinkles could provide a new way of controlling the wavelengths and distribution of waves, whether of sound or light. The new method, developed by researchers at MIT, could eventually find applications from nondestructive testing of materials to sound suppression, and could also provide new insights into soft biological systems and possibly lead to new diagnostic tools.

The same principle applies to the manufacture of plastics parts, such as displays, facings, covers and instrument panels, using injection molding techniques. A liquid plastic melt is injected into a steel forming tool which is heated just like a waffle iron.
