The delegation of the Russian Corporation of Nanotechnologies (RUSNANO) headed by the Chief Executive Officer Anatoly Chubais visited the offices of Alcoa Inc. in New York City and the Alcoa Technical Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
During the visit Alcoa Inc. President and CEO Klaus Kleinfeld and RUSNANO CEO Anatoly Chubais signed the Memorandum of Understanding.
RUSNANO and Alcoa have agreed to explore potential opportunities in applying nanotechnology to a variety of technical and commercial fields, including such promising areas as off shore oil and gas drilling systems, high efficiency power transmission, next generation lighting, energy efficient buildings, transportation systems, packaging and others.
RUSNANO delegation also visited the Alcoa Technical Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to see how Alcoa Inc. is creating the future for the aluminum industry based on the leading innovative solutions and technologies.
Commenting on the results of the visit, Klaus Kleinfeld, Alcoa Inc. President and CEO, said:
“Today we are turning a new page in the history of our presence in Russia. We are very proud to start the partnership with RUSNANO, a leading Russian nanotechnology institution tasked by the Russian Government with the advancement and localization of the nano technologies in Russia for domestic and export markets. Alcoa Inc. has been present in Russia since 1993 and our presence has been enhanced in 2005 with the purchase of the two leading aluminum fabricating facilities Alcoa SMZ (formerly the Samara metallurgical plant) and Alcoa Metallurg Rus (formerly Belaya Kalitva metallurgical production plant),” said Kleinfeld. “Since that time we have modernized the facilities, invested over 750 million USD in their development, and now together with RUSNANO, we are ready for the new development of the cutting edge, most advanced technologies in the aluminum production at our facilities in Russia. This partnership will not only contribute to the increase in the aluminum products consumption in the country, but will also assist in diversifying and innovating the Russian economy,” said Kleinfeld.
RUSNANO CEO Anatoly Chubais stated: “Established in 2007 our Corporation has occupied a very active position in working with the world’s leading companies and scientific institutions on developing and localizing the nano technologies in Russia. We work in cooperation with the most renowned Russian scientists and experts to identify and commercialize the innovative technologies that will take the Russian economy to the next level of development. I am confident that the Memorandum of Understanding that we signed today with Alcoa Inc., one of the global leaders in the production of aluminum and aluminum products, is a first step on the road to a very beneficial joint cooperation that will heavily rely on the both parties’ expansive knowledge and expertise. With Alcoa we are looking forward to the implementation of the concrete projects of bringing nano technologies’ advantage for the creation of the new generation aluminum products for the Russian and export markets”.
