St. Petersburg. Optogan Group held a grand opening of its Optogan plant in St. Petersburg today, marking the first LED and LED module manufacturing facility in Russia and the largest in countries of Eastern Europe and the CIS.
The first line in the St. Petersburg plant is capable of manufacturing 360 million LEDs per year. The plant is large, 15,000 square meters; 5,000 square meters of productive space are devoted to clean rooms for LED chips manufacturing. Optogan has invested 3.35 billion rubles in the project.
Among those participating in the ceremonial opening were Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Sergei Ivanov, Governor of St. Petersburg Valentina Matvienko, President of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) Egor Borisov, RUSNANO CEO Anatoly Chubais, and ONEXIM Group President Mikhail Prokhorov.
Founders of company Optogan, Vladislav Bougrov and Maxim Odnoblyudov, accompanied guests, introducing them to the manufacturing stages of LEDs and LED modules. Participants were shown the energy effectiveness of lighting produced with LED modules at partner assembly enterprises. Co-founder and general director of the manufacturing facility, Vladislav Bougrov, said of the newly opened plant that today only the first line, capacity 30 million LEDs per month, was beginning its work. “By the end of next year,” he added, “we shall start raising production because there is tremendous demand for our company’s products.”
“The LEDs produced here in the St. Petersburg plant will be sold in domestic and international markets. We have already signed the first large sales contracts for them. A portion of the diodes will go to partner enterprises that produce lighting for all of Russia. We shall be proud to label those products “made in Russia,” said Vladislav Bougrov.
Optogan started its Russian business just over a year ago, after receiving financing from RUSNANO, ONEXIM Group, and the Republican Investment Company (Sakha).
"RUSNANO’s primary goal is to take the world’s scientific achievements and create for them the most modern facilities to manufacture products that will withstand competition at the global level. The Optogan plant that we commission today is one of the first large-scale examples of synergy between science and business. The technology based on research by Nobel Prize laureate Zhores Alferov is transformed into mass production, and its output initiates a new phase for a smart energy economy, and a LED industry in Russia,” said RUSNANO CEO Anatoly Chubais.
According to Mikhail Prokhorov, president of ONEXIM Group, “ONEXIM’s strategy envisions investments in innovative projects like this one that are capable, with quality products and a bold idea, of gaining significant market share in Russia, and in the future—worldwide. We believe that thanks to such production, the country will claim its right to a new niche in the world’s economy.”
Optogan developed unique proprietary technology enabling the production of high brightness LEDs, LED lamps and LED luminaires with superior performance. Technologies and the manufacturing processes of Optogan are protected by numerous international patents. The development of the high tech LED production in Russia is in the focus of two main Government industry policies: modernization and energy efficiency.
