Nano-Carbon Fiber Boat Successfully Completes Sea Trials

The 54ft boat, Piranha developed by Zyvex Technologies, recently underwent successful sea testing close to Puget Sound in the Pacific Ocean.

It concluded a six month trial in the rough and smooth seas off the coast of Washington and Oregon. It will be unveiled at the Sea Air Space show to be held close to Washington, DC, on April 11.

The Piranha used only 12 gallons of fuel per hour at 25 knots. It has been fabricated from carbon fiber injected with carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and is lightweight, weighing only 8400 pounds, is easy to move around and is cost- effective. It can travel 2800nm without needing to refuel and in rough seas.

The Piranha will sail on the East Coast and stop at the Sea Air Space exposition. Defense personnel are testing its feasibility to be used as an unmanned platform with multiple mission applications, such as anti-piracy, harbor patrol, and oceanographic surveying.
