i2A Canada and Bruker jointly declared that their products have been certified as meeting the Health Products and Food Branch (HPFB) of Health Canada norms for the Bruker IVD MALDI Biotyper.
The announcement was made at the 2011 Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association for Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (CACMID).
i2a Canada, as the sole sub-distributor of the device delivers the rapid and cost-efficient technology for identifying bacteria. The device is also offered with the i2A SirWeb-MALDITOF integrated software for microbiology labs.
The bench-top system to detect bacteria and yeasts rapidly is based on MALDI-TOF volume spectrometry. Its curated database contains over 3900 strains from more than 2000 microbials. The measured protein fingerprint is identified by matching against the database entry, with a review by an expert. The bacteria can then be identified rapidly. Multiple species can be identified on an individual target, and 30 to 60 identifications made each hour needing no prior testing. The solution provides fast time-to-result, high specificity, low false positive rates, low costs, and low technical barriers.
