Samsung’s 30 nm Class DDR3 Memory and Microsoft’s Data Platform to Develop Energy Saving Server Systems

Samsung Electronics and the Microsoft Technology Centre have come together to create an energy saving server system. This development is part of their server systems evaluation, which is based on providing a match between performance and power conservation.

The evaluation was done by testing the 30 nm class Green DDR3 in dual inline modules having a memory of 8 Gb. These modules were installed on server systems that used Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise operating system for running virtual environments. Upon testing it was established that the systems using the 30 nm class Green DDR3 achieved a power consumption of 15% for every 30-watt decrease in power as compared to systems that used 50 nm class DDR3.

The companies also plan to use the 20 nm class 4Gb DDR3 along with the enterprise SSD to develop more energy saving server systems, which would also give high performance. The 30 nm-class 2Gb Green DDR3 memory module from Samsung consists of the highest performing DRAM levels. Server applications can be run on modules with a memory of up to 1.886 Gbps at 1.35 volts. PC applications can be run with memory modules of up to 2.133 Gbps at 1.5volts, which is faster than the 60 nm-class DDR2 and the 50 nm-class DDR3 by 3.5 times and 1.6 times respectively. The companies also jointly plan to develop data storage devices and next-generation DRAM to enhance the total ownership costs of the IT department of any company.
