Samsung Launches 64-Gigabyte e-MMC NAND Memory Card Using 20nm Technology

Samsung Electronics has announced that it has launched its 64-gigabyte embedded multimedia card (e-MMC) NAND aimed at tablets, smart phones and mobile devices. The company made this announcement at the Samsung Mobile Solutions Forum held every year.

The new multimedia card adopts Samsung’s 20 nm class process technology and measures only 1.4 mm in thickness. It has an eight-die stack and a toggle DDR 2.0 interface. The product can perform sequential read operations at 80 MB/s speed and sequential write operations at 40 MB/s. The multimedia card has a memory storage capacity of 16,000 MP3 files in a single stack weighing 0.6 g. The product can perform write operations randomly at speeds of 400 input/output operations per second.

According to Myung Ho Kim, VP, memory marketing for Device Solutions at Samsung Electronics, the company will increasingly adopt the premium embedded cards by commencing the production of the multi-media memory cards. The company launched the first 64 GB e-MMC in 2010 which comprised of 30 nm class process technology and 32 GB NAND flash components. It also commenced production of the 64 GB e-MMC with 32 GB NAND flash component during the end of 2010. The latest 20 nm class process technology 64 GB NAND flash component is expected to increase the company’s productivity by 60%.
