Veeco Instruments, a provider of process equipment solutions that facilitate the manufacture of LEDs, MEMS, power and optoelectronics, hosted the 2012 MOCVD Taiwan user group meet. About 150 LED manufacturing customers were in attendance at the conference that was held in Tainan in Taiwan and amongst the attendees were some of the top LED manufacturers in Taiwan like FOREPI, Epistar, Huga Optotech, Genesis Photonics (GPI), Arima Optoelectronics, Epileds. and Tekcore.
2012 Veeco Taiwan User Group Meet
Dr. Charles Li, Vice President of R&D at GPI, was one of the invited speakers at the forum and he commented that Veeco’s User Meet is a great event. He expressed his appreciation at the opportunity offered by the forum to collaborate with technology experts at Veeco’s and interact with other LED makers. Dr. Li’s topic was “The Trend of LED Chips for Lighting.” His speech covered the major drivers for LED commercialization in general lighting, specifically cost reduction which is hoped to be achieved by improved high current LED chip technology.
Tim Liu, Vice President and Country Manager for Greater China, Veeco, expressed pleasure at the opportunity to interact with major LED manufacturers in Taiwan. He said that the focus of the forum was on understanding the challenges faced by their customers in manufacturing and to provide cost effective solutions to improve yield and productivity. In order to promote global level adoption of LED lighting, Veeco recently launched a new range of metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) systems based on its TurboDisc (R) technology.
Some of the other topics presented at the forum include “Driving down LED manufacturing costs with TurboDisc MOCVD Products” presented by Dr. Jia Lee, Senior Director of Veeco’s Marketing and Business Development Division and an update on “GaN on Silicon LED Manufacturing” by Dr. Kenny Sun, Director of Veeco’s Taiwan Technology Center.
