The 2012 Awards of the International Society for Advancement of Cytometry (ISAC) were presented on June 26 at CYTO 2012 held in Leipzig, Germany.
The society’s highest award is the Fulwyler Award for Innovative Excellence established in remembrance of the electrostatic cell sorter inventor, Mack J. Fulwyler. Dr. Leon Terstappen is the recipient of the 2012 Fulwyler Award. A doctorate in Applied Physics from the University of Twente, Dr. Terstappen was involved in cytometry research at Becton Dickinson. He later went on to establish the company Immunicon which is credited with the detection of tumor cells in patients’ blood. With 43 patents and 170 published papers to his credit, Dr. Terstappen is serving as a Professor at the University of Twente since the sale of Immunicon to Johnson & Johnson.
The ISAC Membership Award in recognition of outstanding service in the field of cytometry for 2012 was awarded to Dr. Robert Leif. A founding member of ISAC, Dr. Leif has contributed significantly to advancement of cytometry.
The ISAC Distinguished Services Award for 2012 in recognition of role played and contributions to ISAC was given to Drs. Jan Visser and Peter Lansdorp. The ISAC President’s Award for Excellence recognizes outstanding research work carried out at the early stages of one’s doctoral career.
The finalists are shortlisted based on abstracts submitted by them to the CYTO Congress followed by a presentation to the Congress. The 2012 winner of this award is Dr. Sean Bendal from Stanford University for his work titled “42 Parameter Mass Cytometry Analysis Reveals Phenotypic and Functional Hallmarks of Human B Cell Development in Vivo.”
The ISAC Exceptional Student Award follows a selection process similar to the President’s Award. This year’s winner is Rikke K. Andersen from the University of Southern Denmark for her work “Dissection of Melanoma-Specific T-Cell Immunity by Use of Combinatorial Encoding of MHC Multimers.”
