SUNY’s CNSE to Play Leading Role in SEMICON West 2013 and Intersolar North America 2013 Conferences

Demonstrating the impact of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s innovation-driven strategy that is positioning New York as a global leader in two critical 21st century industries, SUNY’s College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (CNSE) announced today that it will play a leading role in this year’s SEMICON West 2013 and Intersolar North America 2013 conferences, spearheading a series of presentations and workshops that will highlight the ongoing progress of the Global 450mm Consortium (G450C) and U.S. Photovoltaic Manufacturing Consortium (PVMC), both headquartered at CNSE.

“In accordance with Governor Andrew Cuomo’s visionary blueprint that has established New York as the global hub for nanotechnology-based education and innovation, CNSE is delighted to play a leading role at the important SEMICON West and Intersolar North America events,” said Dr. Alain E. Kaloyeros, CNSE Senior Vice President and CEO. “Driven by the Governor’s strategic investments, New York is recognized internationally as a leader in next-generation computer chip innovations, through G450C, and clean energy technologies, through PVMC. Highlighting the progress of these game-changing initiatives will enhance CNSE and New York as a desired location for the world’s leading companies focused on advanced research, development, and manufacturing.”

CNSE faculty, researchers, and executives will share information on the latest advances in nanoelectronics and solar photovoltaics research and development during a number of prominent presentations and critical workshops. Additionally, representatives of a number of CNSE’s global corporate partners will present at the conference, including Applied Materials, ASML, GLOBALFOUNDRIES, IBM, Intel, M+W Group, Samsung, SEMATECH, Tokyo Electron, and TSMC.

During SEMICON West, multiple presentations will provide industry updates on G450C, a first-of-its-kind collaboration announced by Governor Cuomo in September 2011 and headquartered at CNSE. It is comprised of five leading international companies – Intel, IBM, GLOBALFOUNDRIES, Samsung and TSMC – working to lead the industry transition from 300mm wafer to 450mm wafer technology. Topics include an update and status report on the progress of G450C; G450C report on environmental, health, and safety (EHS) priorities; future standardization of silicon wafers to enable the transition; and the Facilities 450mm Consortium (F450C) EHS program objectives and status.

CNSE and its corporate partners will also lead key workshops and presentations at Intersolar North America, with the goal of enabling increased photovoltaic efficiency and marketplace viability. This includes a workshop hosted by CNSE on behalf of the U.S. Department of Energy to advance cost-effective clean energy development through the Sunshot Prize competition; a PVMC CIGS roadmapping workshop to accelerate innovative development of new solar technologies; and a presentation detailing ways to grow U.S. photovoltaic manufacturing, secure market deployment, and expand into global markets.

SEMICON West is known as the world’s premier event for nanoelectronics innovation; Intersolar North America is the world’s leading exhibition for the solar industry and its partners. Both conferences run concurrently from July 8 through 11 in San Francisco, California.
