Altera and Wind River Deploy Tools, Solutions for SoC FPGA Devices

Altera Corporation and Wind River® today announced that as a result of their strategic partnership, the companies have developed and deployed tools and solutions for Altera's SoC FPGA devices.

Wind River's industry-leading operating systems and development tools support Altera's multi-core ARM™ processor-based SoC platforms.

By leveraging Wind River's embedded operating systems (VxWorks® real-time operating system and Wind River Linux) and Wind River Workbench development tools, software architects and developers can realize the full potential of Altera's multicore ARM-based SoC devices and design high-performance multi-core real-time systems. Wind River embedded operating systems and development tools are designed to support multi-core processor architectures and SMP (Symmetric Multi-Processing) with real-time optimizations. This includes Wind River Hypervisor virtualization technology that enables Linux and VxWorks to run simultaneously in an Asymmetric Multiprocessing (AMP) mode. All are now available on the Altera Cyclone® V SoC and will be available soon for the Arria® V SoC, Arria® 10 SoC and Stratix® 10 SoC.

"As embedded system developers turn to powerful multi-core platforms for power and performance benefits, software content increases in size and complexity; by using our operating systems and development tools with Altera's multi-core SoC platform, embedded system designers have a streamlined solution that leverages the key multi-core benefits, while maintaining real-time responsiveness and minimizing risk to bring products to market faster," said Dinyar Dastoor, vice president of product management at Wind River. "We are excited to collaborate with Altera to develop a growing number of solutions for their longer term SoC roadmap."

"Together with Wind River, we are combining the leading SoC FPGA platform with a comprehensive package of multi-core tools and software that will help developers address the challenges that embedded multi-core processors present," said Chris Balough, senior director of SoC product marketing at Altera. "Wind River's commitment to provide support for the Altera SoC platforms with their proven operating systems and development tools will accelerate design development time and take our mutual customers from product prototyping to commercialization faster."
