TESCAN, a leading global supplier of scanning electron microscopes and focused ion beam workstations has delivered a LYRA FIB-SEM workstation to UNH’s University Instrumentation Center, a facility dedicated to the advancement of research.
The LYRA is configured with an EDAX Pegasus EDS/EBSD system to provide chemical and structural analysis in three-dimensional views. This new instrument is supported in part by a Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) Grant from the National Science Foundation entitled, MRI: Acquisition of Analytical Scanning Electron Microscope for Engineering and Earth Science Research.
Todd Gross, Principal Investigator for the NSF MRI grant, states, “The specialized capabilities of this instrument will greatly advance our ability to solve problems in part-to-grain size ratio effects in metal forming research, evolution of grain structure and forming quality in micro and nanoforming, the importance of twinning and dislocation-based deformation in forming of hexagonal close packed alloy, understanding mantle formation and heterogeneities in the upper mantle through zircon crystal growth rings, determination of pore structure in volcanic ash, and determination of deformation mechanisms at the base of mantle seismogenic zones by studying olivine crystal deformation.”
Jeff Streger, Vice President of TESCAN USA, states, "The addition of the LYRA FIB-SEM workstation at the University of New Hampshire continues to strengthen our position as a supplier of FIB-SEM workstations in North America.” Streger also adds, “We look forward to partnering and engaging with UNH to further advance research and technology in the New England region through various joint activities.”
