Supporting Governor Andrew Cuomo’s vision for bolstering New York State’s high-tech workforce through cutting-edge educational initiatives, the Colleges of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (CNSE) at SUNY Polytechnic Institute (SUNY Poly) hosted 300 middle and high school students on Thursday, October 16, as part of its exciting “NanoCareer Day” program.
During the quarterly event, NanoCollege faculty members utilized hands-on experiments to showcase the exciting science behind New York’s rapidly expanding innovation economy.
Students from eight counties took part in the nanotechnology-enabled activities, including the chance to investigate polymers, gown up in cleanroom “bunny” suits, learn how small a nanometer is, and tour CNSE’s $20 billion Albany NanoTech Complex. Students also learned about nanotechnology’s role in health applications and the increasing number of high-tech careers at New York’s top global corporations and at CNSE.
Participating schools and counties included: Knickerbacker Middle School, Lansingburgh Central School District (Rensselaer); Broadalbin-Perth Middle School, Broadalbin-Perth Central School District (Fulton); Schenectady High School (Smart Scholars Program), Schenectady City School District (Schenectady); Otsego Area Occupational Center, Otsego Northern Catskill BOCES, (Otsego); Lake George High School, Lake George Central School District (Warren); Queensbury Middle School, Queensbury Union Free School District (Warren); Troy Middle School, Troy City School District (Rensselaer); Southern Adirondack Education Center, Washington Saratoga Warren Hamilton Essex BOCES (Washington); Notre Dame Jr./Sr. High School, Diocese of Syracuse (Oneida); and SUNY Cobleskill Liberty Partnerships Program (Schoharie).
