The 2016 GSMA Mobile World Congress, with the theme 'Mobile is Everything', will bring in over 95,000 participants from the mobile phone and related industry sectors.
The Congress will have participation from over 2,100 companies showcasing new and emerging trends and technologies. At this year’s event the Graphene Pavilion will make its debut. Research centers, start-ups and enterprises, focusing on graphene-related topics, will have a place of prominence in the mobile sectors most important industry event, sharing knowledge in an area that has the potential to revolutionize mobile technology.
At Mobile World Congress, we're focused on showcasing cutting-edge technologies and solutions and graphene is certainly a technology that will have a significant impact on our industry in the years to come. We're pleased to be working with ICFO, under Professor Koppens' leadership, to bring the promise of graphene to Mobile World Congress attendees, demonstrating the nearly endless use cases for this technology.
John Hoffman, CEO, GSMA Ltd.
The Graphene Pavilion is a collaborative effort between the Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO) and the Graphene Flagship (GF), supported by the GSMA. Latest advancements in graphene research and available graphene-related innovations will be showcased in the pavilion. The 135 m2 Graphene Pavilion (Hall 8) will exhibit content dealing with the transformation of display technology (for flexible screens); eTextile, sensors, and conductive ink (for wearables, Internet-of-Things, Smart Cities, eHealth); technology on energy transmission and its storage (supercapacitors); and data communications (flexible antennas, photodetectors and receivers).
Frank Koppens, the ICREA Professor at ICFO and leader of the Optoelectronics Work package of the GF, is supervising the development of the grapheme pavilion. He has been awarded with the Huygens Prize (NL), and the National Prize for Young Talent (ES/Catalonia). He is well-known for his ground-breaking research, and regular publications in high impact journals, Koppens is a leader in the field of grapheme innovations. The collaboration with ICFO's Knowledge and Technology Transfer division has enabled his research group to create patents and prototypes, which are being transformed into new business opportunities, and into collaborations with the industry and the investor community in the ICT sector. Many patents and prototypes will be displayed in the Graphene Pavilion.
As a noted graphene expert, Koppens is acting as a lynchpin between GSMA, the GF, and industry for the Graphene Pavilion. His participation at this year's Mobile World Congress is directing the worlds attention towards Barcelona, as the city is increasingly becoming known for graphene-related innovations.
Professor Koppens will also be chairing a track session in the Mobile World Congress conference on Thursday, 25th February. The Nobel Prize-winning Professor Kostya Novoselov, who first discovered graphene, will present a paper in the conference's "Innovation" keynote scheduled for the morning of 25th February.
