Carbon Nanotube Hybrid Transparent Film Reduces Smartphone RF Energy Exposure by Up to 95%

CHASM Advanced Materials, Inc., a leader in next generation advanced materials, today announced the launch of AgeNTTM RF Shielding Film, which can reduce the radio frequency (RF) energy exposure from smartphones by up to 95%.

The company also announced that it has entered into an agreement with Venti Group, LLC to license its patented Frequency Selective Surface (FSS) technology, a key component of its AgeNT RF Shielding Film solution.

“Smartphones are an integral part of modern society and questions concerning their health risks are only just beginning to emerge. With the upcoming 5G rollout employing new frequencies to a broader array of devices and antennas, the wireless signal density surrounding each of us is increasing,” said David Arthur, CEO and Co-Founder of CHASM Advanced Materials.

Arthur continued, “Requiring no electrical or backplane connection, device maker’s now have an opportunity to offer their customers increased safety with minimal impact on device manufacturing.   Simply embedding our advanced film between the touch screen and the display module, AgeNT RF Shielding Film is an easy and affordable way to reduce the RF risk of any smartphone model while adding the benefit of optimizing performance.”

Using a combination of advanced materials, engineers have successfully developed AgeNT RF Shielding Film. The technology combines Venti Group’s Frequency Selective Surface (FSS) tuned by design to only effect predetermined frequencies of waves and CHASM’s transparent, flexible printed electronic (FPE) film made from an advanced combination of carbon nanotubes (CNT) and silver nanowires (AgNW). Commonly referred to as a CNT hybrid, the novel combination of strong, conductive, and environmentally stable CNT inks with a transparent and conductive AgNW layer creates a new category of transparent FPE that is both superior in performance and more cost-effective to manufacture.

For RF shielding to be effective in a cellular phone application, the FSS design must impact the full cellular frequency range of 600MHz to 6GHz.  Only CHASM’s AgeNT RF Shielding Film combines a distinctive periodic FSS pattern with the unique material properties of CNT hybrid films to deliver superior RF reflection performance due to strong interaction between RF signals and CNTs.

Independent lab testing performed in an anechoic chamber confirms up to 95% of radiation impinging upon the AgeNT RF Shielding Film is redirected away from areas of interest such as a user’s brain when typically holding a phone to their ear.  Because the signal is redirected and not just dissipated – in part back towards the broadcast antenna – the signal strength of the phone is actually increased.  Adding AgeNT RF Shielding Film in this test was also found to lower Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) values for this cell phone model by 25% - a measure of the rate of RF energy absorption by the body.

“Regardless of your position on the effects of cell phone radiation, third party tests have shown the redirection of these emissions away from the phone concentrates and provides a stronger usable signal,” said Henry Adamany, CEO of Venti Group. “Partnering with CHASM has resulted in the only phone solution that truly protects against the health risks of radiation with no add-ons to the phone required.”
