A review of publications on nanotechnology related research and applications reveals the widespread use of gold in nanotechnology. Gold Reference Standards

Applications for Gold Reference Standards
NIST, which is a US federal agency, will use BBnternational’s colloidal gold nanoparticles to create nanoscale reference materials for the evaluation and qualification of methodology and instrument performance. This means that companies involved in the fields of research and diagnostics will be able to ensure that their equipment is performing within the required QC parameters for the measurement and characterisation of quality nanoparticles.
