Liam worked on various research projects at some the highest ranking Chemistry and Chemical Engineering departments for academic research in the UK. One of the research projects included creating polyoxovanadate molecular magnets under anaerobic conditions from calixarene precursor materials; scaling up the production of air-filled emulsions from the bench to pilot scale (for the first time). The project achieved a bench scale yield of up to 98.7% and producing polymer-based scaffolds for the proliferation of stem cells in tissue engineering applications.

Liam chose to step out of academic research and went straight into freelancing as a science writer. Aside from wanting to work in an area where this knowledge could be put to good use, Liam chose to take up freelancing as his career so that he could travel around the world with his family.

As a writer, Liam provides an informative approach, explaining complex scientific topics to both scientists and non-scientists. Liam has over 350 articles published to date across various scientific areas and industries - with over 200 articles located across all the AZo websites, including News Medical.

Liam also holds the position of Senior Science Communications Officer at the Nanotechnology Industries Association (NIA) and has spent the last few years providing writing and editing services for companies, associations and media websites located across the globe.

Aside from writing, Liam is also a Member of the Advisory Board for the National Graphene Association (NGA) in the U.S. and is a Member of the Board of Trustees for GlamSci – a UK-based science charity. Liam is also a member of the British Society for Nanomedicine (BSNM) and the International Association of Advanced Materials (IAAM), as well as a peer reviewer for multiple academic journals.
