In the late 90s, the concept of building a quantum computer from creating semiconducting silicon components to use as qubits was put forward. Since then, many advances have been made in this field, and scientists have become more in control over the charge and spins in single dopants, pushing forward our expertise in the nanofabrication of semiconductors.

The study of cell-nanoparticle interactions is vital for researchers specializing in the fields of nanomedicine and nanotoxicology. In nanotoxicology, the quantity of nanoparticles internalized by the cells or attached to the external surfaces of cells, regulate the toxic profile of those particles. Generally, in the field of medicine, the efficacy of the medically effective nanoparticles is hugely dependent on the detailed pathway of cell-nanoparticle interactions. Even though we understand the

Measurement of flow is a crucial parameter in many different processes, whether it is of a liquid or gas. It is important to ascertain that the right fluid is at the right place at the right time in many different industrial and scientific operations. The ability to conduct accurate flow measurements is crucial for product quality in some applications.

Nitinol – pronounced night-in-all – is a nickel-titanium alloy that demonstrates a unique ability, the capacity to change its shape, dependent on the surrounding environment. This unusual property derives from a reversible solid to solid state transformation and makes it one of the most utilized shape memory alloys.

Titanium and its alloys have been intensively investigated in biomedical applications including artificial joints, because of their excellent resistance to corrosion, elastic modulus characteristics, strength and biocompatibility. Tribological parameters are low for these alloys, however, this makes them unsuitable for alloys used in artificial joints. Many methods have been trialed to improve tribological performance, such as ion implantation and physical vapor deposition.

This year, governments and local government bodies around the world responded to the warnings of the scientific community and pressure from their (especially younger) populations to declare a state of climate emergency. These declarations will help increase efforts to reduce harmful effects of human activity on the planet’s climate and ecosystems. A significant part of these efforts must be to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels by generating and using energy sustainably.

Graphene is a much-celebrated thin film material with numerous, diverse properties, making it suitable for a wide range of applications. Its development – as well as the continual development of applications for graphene – is concurrent with the development of advanced metal alloys. The graphene industry can be expected to work alongside – and in some cases against – the advanced alloy industry in coming years.
