Using Nanotechnology and Nanoparticle Based Imaging to Produce Whole Body Images Showing Cancer Tumor Locations

Researchers have published a paper that describes a strategy for
small-animal optical imaging based on Raman spectroscopy and
Raman nanoparticles. Surface-enhanced Raman scattering nanoparticles
and single-wall carbon nanotubes were used to demonstrate
whole-body Raman imaging, nanoparticle pharmacokinetics,
multiplexing, and in vivo tumor targeting, using an imaging
system adapted for small-animal Raman imaging.

New Microscope Design Allows Nanoparticles to be Tracked in Three Dimensions

Heart of the orthogonal tracking microscope system developed at NIST is this nanoparticle solution sample well etched in silicon. Careful orientation of the silicon crystal makes it possible to chemically etch angled sides in the well so smooth they act as mirrors. In this configuration, four side views of a nanoparticle floating in solution (left) are reflected up. A microscope above the well sees the real particle (center, right) and four reflections that show the particle's vertical position.

Spintronics Pioneer Honored at Harvard Birthday Party

What might be Harvard’s oddest birthday party unfolded last over Feb. 29 and March 1. In a lecture hall at Maxwell Dworkin, 50 physicists gathered to share the latest research in spintronics, an emerging branch of their science concerned with the quantum spin states of electrons, and to honor one-time Soviet scientist Emmanuel I. Rashba who turned 80 last October.
