Micrel's New MIC23060 IC Offers Flexible Sequencing for Latest Portable Devices

Micrel, Inc. (NASDAQ: MCRL), an industry leader in analog, high bandwidth communications and Ethernet IC solutions, today introduced the MIC23060.

The device is a highly efficient power management IC that integrates a high efficiency DC/DC converter with the Company's HyperLight Load™ technology and a post regulating, low voltage capable LDO. The solution includes a flexible sequencing feature that allows users to configure the device for many of the market's latest processors. Targeted applications include mobile phones, PDAs, digital cameras and DSP power supplies. The IC is currently available in volume and priced at $2.20 for 1K.

"With handheld and mobile applications clamoring for longer battery life, the need to manage power efficiently continues to be one of the highest design priorities," noted Andy Khayat, director, portable business unit, Micrel. "Micrel's MIC23060 offers very high efficiency and completely flexible sequencing for today's portable devices."

The high 4MHz operating frequency of the MIC23060 allows the use of small external components and reduces output ripple. The device provides every potential combination of turn-on and turn-off sequencing of the two outputs by connecting two pins either high or low, by and using a single GPIO to enable and disable the DC/DC and LDO outputs. The LDO is designed to power directly from the battery and/or post regulate from the output of the DC/DC converter for high system efficiency. In applications where the LDO is enabled prior to the DC/DC, the LDO is first powered by the system input voltage (typically a battery source). Once the DC/DC is enabled, the input to the LDO seamlessly transitions to the post-regulated output of the DC/DC converter. The MIC23060 features a Micro Cap design, operates using small ceramic output capacitors and tiny inductors for stability. The solution reduces board space and component cost. It is available in a tiny 2.5mm x 2.5mm Thin MLF® package.
