Research at Arizona State University is promising to expand the potential of laser technology.
Engineers and scientists led by professor Cun-Zheng Ning, for instance, are making advances in the use of nanolasers that may provide ways to improve the performance of computers and speed up Internet access.
That would involve optical devices (in other words, tiny lasers) working in conjunction with electronic circuits, to create what experts are calling "data highways made of light."
Ning's contributions to the quest to achieve "the dream of optical computing" are noted in an edition of Science magazine.
Ning is a professor in the School of Electrical, Computer and Energy Engineering, a part of in ASU’s Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering.
