Jena Researchers Introduce Nano Cellulose for Wound Dressings

Danger is imminent when bacteria enter an open wound: bacterial infection can not only cause dangerous sepsis, they also obstruct the normal healing process.

In interdisciplinary team of researchers at Jena University is making use of certain bacterias abilities in order to help patients with chronic wounds. Chemists from the Institute for technical chemistry and environmental chemistry are making so called Gluconacetobacter-bacteria produce Nano cellulose, which then functions as a basic material for wound dressings.

In cooperation with pharmacists, materials scientists, medics and economic scientists, they have launched the project “NanocellCare”. With this, the researchers are trying to equip Nano cellulose with different active agents and test their application for wound care. The Free State of Thuringia supports the research project for the next two years with almost 400,000 Euros from the “European Fond for Regional Development”.
