STAAR Surgical recently received the CE Mark approval for its nanoFLEX Collamer Single Piece IOL injected by a 2.2mm slit with the nanoPOINT Injector System.
The solution combines the in-house aspheric optic design maximized for the natural shape of the eye. This development will enable the company to commercialize the platform within the European Economic Area (EEA) and pave the way for more international approvals.
The compressible Collamer is a lens material comprising collagen, a chromophore that absorbs UV, and a poly-HEMA- based copolymer. The ability to compress enables the lens to be delivered through a minute -incision. The anti-reflective material surface helps deliver enhanced vision, while removing potential glare and halos. It reduces high order errors and contains 40% water.
According to Hans Blickensdoerfer, the company’s president, Europe and Latin America, the product is ideally suited for cataract solutions. Surgeons will be able to use a blended vision strategy to offer patients near, intermediate and distance vision. Dr. Lipstock presented a paper on this aspect at the 2011 American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ASCRS) meeting. The research revealed that when patients received nanoFLEX with blended vision, their reading ability at all distances were enhanced.
Patients who are offered blended vision or monovsion also have access to diagnostic tests that will assure the patients that they do not have astigmatic errors, an issue that cannot be addressed by monofocal IOLs.
