STMicroelectronics’ Group Vice President and General Manager of its MEMS, Sensors and High Performance Analog Division, Benedetto Vigna will deliver a keynote address on the concept of art and science in MEMS and the significance of both aspects at the SEMICON Taiwan 2011 MEMS Forum being conducted at the Taipei International Convention Center.
STMicroelectronics has decades of experience in the mass production of MEMS actuators and sensors. The company is the first manufacturer to mass produce MEMS on 8 " silicon wafers in 2006. It transformed the consumer MEMS market by producing compact and highly precise motion sensors at low cost through deep application expertise, advanced product design and timely and bold infrastructure investments.
As the pioneer in MEMS technology advancement, STMicroelectronics has introduced the software integration of several sensors into one system, resulting in the formation of smart-sensor MEMS systems that feature various types of processing and sensing functionalities and wireless connectivity. These smart sensors not only measure the environment where they function but have the potential to judge the environment and offer suitable. Thus, they enhance performance and functionality in several applications such as patient monitoring, portable navigation devices, robotics, gaming and human machine interface.
STMicroelectronics’ MEMS chips have allowed motion-activated user interfaces in various consumer electronics products such as remotes, digital still cameras, game consoles, personal media players, tablets and smart phones. Automotive equipment manufacturers incorporate the company’s MEMS in uses such as improved navigation systems and airbags, and computer producers employ its acceleration sensors for free-fall protection applications in laptop hard-disk drives.
