Ioxus’ Purchase of Power Systems Helps Develop Flexible Ultracapacitors

Ioxus, a provider of high-performance ultracapacitor technology for various markets, has declared the acquisition of Power Systems, a Japanese company that manufactures slim-pack, flexible electric double layer capacitors, and has a strong customer base in Asia Pacific.

Ioxus acquires the technological building blocks for developing flexible ultracapacitor energy storage systems for numerous applications through Power Systems’ in-house high-power flat cell design.

Ioxus’ purchase of Power Systems comes a year following its acquisition of Advanced Energy Conversion, a specialist in sophisticated ultracap module designs and power electronics. Ioxus’ Chief Executive Officer, Mark McGough commented that Power Systems’ proprietary higher power cells and thin design are valuable assets because their power capabilities and form factor are suitable for producing energy storage modules capable of improving the performance of clean tech applications. The company fundamentally enhances the utilization of ultracaps by providing a patented, flat cell design to customers in a broad array of module formats, McGough concluded.

Ioxus will continue to work with Power Systems’ blue-chip customers in Japan, in line with its ongoing expansion strategy in the Asia-Pacific market. Through this acquisition, the company increases the scale of its business, particularly in Japan where Power Systems has a majority share in the market for plus-sized 100-F ultracapacitors.

According to Makoto Ota, Power Systems’ President, the company has successfully developed high-power, thin-cell ultracapacitors for utilization in traditional module formats for Japanese customer base.
