The Society for Brain Mapping and Therapeutics (SBMT) has declared that it will conduct its 9th Annual World Congress on Brain, Spinal Cord Mapping, and Image Guided Therapy at the Toronto Metro Convention Center in Toronto, Canada from June 2 to 4, 2012.
‘Nano-Bio-Electronics’ is the theme of the conference that emphasizes the integration of biomedical engineering, stem cell research, nanotechnology, and imaging of the spinal cord and brain to advance the treatment for neurological diseases such as neurological cancers, Alzheimer's Disease, Parkinson's Disease, and traumatic spinal cord and brain injuries.
MaRS Innovation, the University of Toronto, the Government of Canada and the American Association of Neurological Surgeons also support the 2012 World Congress. The International Society for Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Medicine has endorsed the event.
SBMT’s Chairman of the Board, Babak Kateb, who also serves as Director of the National Center for Nano-Bio-Electronics and President of the Brain Mapping Foundation, commented that the Nano-Bio-Electronic alliance is established to help in integrating nanotechnology, cellular therapy and stem cells with medical imaging and devices. This alliance will have an impact on the worldwide biomedical science and healthcare delivery by establishing national and international collaborations with major industries, organizations, universities and governments.
Toronto’s well-established network of biomedical engineers, neuroscientists and investors interested in the nanotechnology and biomedical fields was the reason behind its selection for conducting the 2012 World Congress. Michael Fehlings, Director of the Neuroscience Program and Professor of neurosurgery at the University of Toronto and Chairman of the local organizing committee, stated that the event will display the latest developments in surgical intervention, bioengineering, cellular and molecular mechanisms, and imaging.
