Nanoco Produces Green Cadmium-Free Quantum Dots for Japanese Customer

Nanoco Group, which develops and produces nanomaterials such as cadmium-free quantum dots, has announced the successful production of a batch of 1 kg green cadmium-free quantum dots for a key company based in Japan, generating $2million in revenues for Nanoco.

In 2011, the same Japanese customer had paid $2 million to Nanoco to receive a batch of 1 kg of red quantum dots. Nanoco has reached another key technical achievement by producing the green quantum dots because these quantum dots are smaller in size, which makes them difficult to be manufactured when compared to red quantum dots. The company produced green quantum dots at its manufacturing plant in Runcorn, Cheshire.

Nanoco's red and green quantum dots will be used by the Japanese company for the development of a variety of LED applications such as LED-based general lighting and backlighting of LCD displays. The color performance of a LCD television can be improved when quantum dot LEDs are used in its backlighting. Using Nanoco's quantum dots, lighting manufacturers can fine tune white light shade, which in turn provides conventional incandescent lights’ warm feeling to next-generation white LED lights.

Nanoco's Chief Executive Officer, Michael Edelman stated that the company is happy about the production of a batch of 1 kg green cadmium-free quantum dots as per this Japanese customer’s specifications. The company has manufactured green quantum dots for the first time on this scale, a major technical milestone for the company because green dots’ size is mere one-half the size of red dots.
