Industrially sponsored, Cranfield University offers PhD positions in Ultra Precision Engineering with up to £17,000 per annum (tax free) plus UK/EU fees*

Duration of award: 3 years
We are seeking a high calibre engineering and physics graduate to undertake exciting and challenging research projects within the EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Ultra Precision. The Centre is led by world leading researchers from Cranfield and Cambridge Universities and aims to develop the next generation of production machines, metrology systems and processes.
Industrial sponsorships have been secured with Gooch & Housego, Heidenhain, Zeiss, Qioptiq, M-solv and Cranfield Precision to research advanced machine technologies
Nature of research projects:
Specific research areas will include; the design of machine tools, reel to reel machine systems, active magnetic bearings, plasma/laser/ion beam systems, nano -imprinting, embossing, film handling and precise control & alignment technologies.
Entry requirements:
Suitable applicants will be expected to have a First or Upper Second Class honours degree in a relevant engineering or physics based discipline. Previous experience of machine tools and production environments or an MSc in a relevant subject would be desirable.

Funding: *Applicants are eligible for a bursary of up to £17,000 for the duration of the award dependent upon qualifications and experience. This studentship will cover the tuition fees for qualified UK/EU students only. Non UK/EU students are required to pay Cranfield University Tuition Fees.
We require that applicants are under no restrictions regarding how long they can stay in the UK. i.e. have no visa restrictions or applicant has "settled status" and has been "ordinarily resident" in the UK for 3 years prior to start of studies and has not been residing in the UK wholly or mainly for the purpose of full-time education. All EU nationals are eligible to receive a fees-only award if they do not have "settled status" in the UK.
