Disruption: rupture or sudden interruption. Disruptive Innovation: is just what the Science Research Centre NanoGUNE has done, creating the NovaSpider 3D spinning machine, a breakthrough which is set to revolutionise the way nanofibres are produced. Why? Simple: because this machine enables the user to produce 3D structures based on state-of-the-art nanofibres in his/her own lab.
The ‘mount it yourself’ concept meets electro-spinning thanks to this machine. “This is a new experience level in nanofibre production”, stated its creators. Without a doubt, this is a challenge for students and a ‘gift’ for young researchers. “It offers very well-rounded solutions at a highly competitive price: $10,428 (€9,850)”, they added.
This development was possible thanks to the work co-ordinated by NanoGUNE, the Science Research Centre, and Tumaker, the specialist printing firm. “We know well which materials are required to continue progressing. In addition, NovaSpider has the advantage of open-source SW and community, as many users will be interested in sharing this experience”, said NanoGUNE.
Nanofibres boast a very special set of characteristics which make them ideal for research and further application to multiple areas: biomedical devices, Information Technology, space sector, industrial products, textile engineering, etc. In this latter case, for instance, research on nanofibres may be the first step towards the design of ‘smart clothes’. Clothes offering a response to different environmental or personal conditions and which could even save lives. Thus, in the event of very low vital signs, the fabric could be even programmed to supply a specific drug to the clothes wearer.
What is revolutionary about NovaSpider is that it greatly facilitates the work of researchers. Moreover, NanoGUNE offers users “total scientific support required” for installation and a “very comprehensive” documentation kit regarding its operation.
Nanoscience provides huge possibilities to the world as they know very well at NanoGUNE. This Science Research Centre, which opened in 2009, was created to boost business competitiveness and economic development in the Basque Country (Spain). For six years, this research group has progressed in every field and thanks to a team of over 70 scientists from 25 countries, has achieved outstanding achievements which have been acknowledged and used worldwide.
