The Minerals, Metals + Materials Society (TMS) has launched a new version of its Materials Technology@TMS web site, an on-line gathering place for materials scientists and engineers throughout the world. All web users are invited to read stories, download resources, and participate in discussions free of charge through the site’s four broad-based technical communities.
The new Materials Technology@TMS site provides forums for those engaged in developing emerging materials technologies, improving established materials technologies, educating the next generation of materials scientists and engineers, and using technical skills to meet societal needs. Each of these four communities provides downloadable resources, news and articles on recent developments in the field, and discussion board areas where materials scientists and engineers can discuss their work and build a network of colleagues in their technical areas.
The site is made up of the following four communities that together cover the broad spectrum of materials science and engineering:
Materials Education
Course notes, videos, tutorials, visualizations, books, articles--everything an educator could need to prepare for a course in materials science or engineering can be accessed through the Materials Education community. The development of this site is partially sponsored by a grant from the U.S. National Science Foundation.
Materials and Society
This community facilitates the development of materials solutions to meet global societal needs such as energy security, resource sustainability, environmental issues, and aging infrastructure, which can be addressed by creative engineering solutions.
Emerging Materials Technologies
As materials science and engineering expands to encompass new technologies, such as nanomaterials, biomaterials, and computational tools, this community provides an environment where these new fields can develop and flourish.
Established Materials Technologies
This on-line community will provide a gathering place where materials scientists, engineers, and metallurgists can meet to discuss improvements to the production of metals, the processing of minerals, and the use of traditional materials in non-traditional applications.
The original Materials Technology@TMS web site was launched in February 2007 and consisted of six narrowly focused materials communities on: education, integrated computational materials engineering, lead-free solders, magnesium, materials for nuclear power, and superalloys. All of the resources from these sites have been incorporated into the four broader communities. The new construct broadens the reach of the site to a larger community of materials scientists and engineers, both TMS members and nonmembers.
The communities are enhanced by user contributions, either in the form of resources that could be of use to the larger materials field, by posting information and questions on the community discussion boards, or by submitting updates on research work to be spotlighted on the home page of the site. Those wishing to contribute to the site can simply create a free registration.
TMS is the professional organization encompassing the entire range of materials science and engineering, from minerals processing and primary metals production to basic research and the advanced applications of materials. Included among its 9,500 professional and student members are metallurgical and materials engineers, scientists, researchers, educators, and administrators from six continents.
