Nanotechnology Used To Create Environmentally Friendly Disinfectant - New Product

EnviroSystems of San Jose is using nanotechnology to produce strong but environmentally friendly chemicals. Now on the market is a disinfectant called EcoTru that wipes out germs and viruses without harming people or the environment.

In the wake of last years severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) epidemic numerous airlines are now using EcoTru to disinfect aircraft. Other companies using the product include Scotia Prince Cruises as EcoTru doesn’t irritate like bleach and it also doesn’t cause any corrosion.

Unlike other disinfectants, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency allows EcoTru to be sold without a toxic warning label. The active chemical in EcoTru is para-chloro-meta-xylenol, or PCMX. The PCMX nanoparticles are contained in oil droplets suspended in water and are so small they can penetrate the cell walls of bacteria where the cell is essentially blown up and destroyed.
