Background
Professor Castro is an Assistant Professor at the Chemical Engineering and
Materials Science Department at University of California in Davis, and a faculty
member of the Peter A. Rock Thermochemistry Laboratory.
He obtained his PhD in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, and from 2005
to 2009 he hold a Professor position at the Department of Metallurgical and
Materials Engineering at FEI University Center, Brazil. While there, he built
up a laboratory dedicated to research on nanoceramics technologies and won the
Werner von Siemens Technological Innovation Award in 2008. In 2009 he assumed
the current position at UC Davis, where he now coordinates research on both
science and technology of nanoceramics and nanocomposites.
The interest of his research group is mostly on the energetics of nanomaterials,
in particular on how it correlates with nanosintering, to understand and control
nanostructures for energy applications. Ceramic processing, radiation tolerant
materials, lithium based cathodes and military devices are among the studied
technological applications.
