The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation awarded its coveted fellowships to two international researchers for planned research works at INM — Leibniz Institute for New Materials. Prof. Animangsu Ghatak from India and Dr. Duangkamon Baowan from Thailand will be doing research at INM in 2011.
"The fellows' decision to spend their research stay at our institute shows the importance and the high value of INM in the international research landscape", explains Eduard Arzt, Scientific Director at INM. The research focus of both scientists is exactly in line with the research objectives of our institute, Prof. Arzt continues. "We are certain that this will be a high-producing and successful exchange for both parts."
The Chemical Engineer Animangsu Ghatak will bring his expertise in the field of adhesion of new contact systems to the INM program division "Functional Surfaces". His research objective is an active adhesion that can be triggered and controlled by external factors such as temperature. Ghatak is a Professor for Chemical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur, one of the best Technical Universities in India.
In the framework of her fellowship Duangkamon Baowan examines the penetration of nanoparticles through cellular membranes and human skin. The mathematician wants to combine experimental work and computer simulation by mathematical modelling. For this purpose, she uses the research opportunities given at the Campus Saarbrücken: She will be working at the Centre for Bioinformatics, headed by Prof. Volkhard Helms, and at INM in the program division "Nanocell Interactions". Baowan is an Assistant Professor at the Mahidol University in Thailand, one of the most renowned universities in Asia.
With its fellowships the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation promotes excellent researchers and scientists of all stages of career. Prof. Animangsu Ghatak receives a Humboldt Research Fellowship for Experienced Scientists, and Dr. Duangkamon Baowan receives a Humboldt Research Fellowship for Postdoctoral Researchers.
