Simrit has created Reduced Friction by Nanotechnology (RFN), a new sophisticated surface treatment tool for enhancing the performance and service life of seals.
Sealing parts derived from elastomeric substances have innately improved surface energies and an elevated coefficient of friction (COF). Hence, when such a seal establishes contact with the joining part, the surfaces of the two components can develop a ‘stiction’ effect, which is damaging during irregular contacts. For instance, stiction effect has a major effect on applications including shock absorbers in bicycles, which require a reduced breakaway force for soft shock performance.
Simrit has developed the RFN process for avoiding stiction effect. The process includes application of its exclusive surface alteration to rubber parts to minimize COF. The modified surface provides high resistance top abrasion, reduced COF, resilience to destructive fluids and extended service life. The RFN treatment is unscented, see-through and can be used in applications requiring cleanliness, minimum stiction effect and extended service life.
David R. Monaco, President of Simrit, has stated that their sophisticated technologies and methods offer enhanced performance and consistency for their clients. He mentioned that surfaces treated using RFN method have reduced static COF by 70% and have showed enhanced resistance to media, minimum torque and loading characteristics.
In treated surfaces, prolonged exposure to friction, fuel and ozone have not exhibited increase in COF, whereas non-treated surfaces have shown 80% to 100% increase in COF in due course. In addition, the RFN method does not change the physical characteristics of the elastomer. It helps the seal to remain adaptable to endure very low temperatures and excessive forces, without developing cracks.
