Semiconductor Manufacturing International (SMIC), a state-of-the-art semiconductor foundry in China, has reported that its subsidiary SMIC Beijing has inked a cooperation framework document with the Beijing municipal government to establish a joint venture to start SMIC Beijing's second phase expansion project.
SMIC's Chairman Zhang Wenyi and Beijing officials participated in the signing ceremony. The Beijing municipal government will support the development of the SMIC Beijing second phase expansion project. The project will be built on a site nearby SMIC Beijing's existing 12-inch mega-fab. It will run at the 32/28 nm and 45/40 nm technology nodes. After the completion of the second phase expansion, SMIC Beijing will feature a larger production base that can manufacture products at a low cost and at highly sophisticated technology nodes.
The Beijing municipal government gives high priority to the high-tech semiconductor industry. After years of advancement, SMIC Beijing has gained significant operational experience, customer relationships, talent and technology. It gets support from the Beijing government for further reinforcement and expansion. The SMIC Beijing second phase expansion project will a play a major role in the economic structure optimization and development of the region.
SMIC Beijing, registered in the Beijing Economic and Technological Development Area in 2002, had started production in September 2004 as the first 12-inch wafer production facility in mainland China. It is SMIC's largest production base for 12" wafers. SMIC Beijing achieved volume production in 90 nm node in 2006, in 65 nm node in 2009, and in 55 nm node in 2011.
