Enerpulse Technologies, the manufacturers of Pulstar Spark Plugs, announced today that its founder, president and chief technology officer (CTO), Lou Camilli, will present an innovative technical paper at the 2014 SAE International Powertrain, Fuels & Lubricants meeting in Birmingham, England on Monday, October 20.
The paper is co-authored by Dr. Timothy J. Jacobs, (Texas A&M University) and Matthias Neubauer, (AVL, www.avl.com).
The paper, "High Power Discharge Combustion Effects on Fuel Consumption, Emissions, and Catalyst Heating," presents the results of testing conducted at AVL's laboratories in Graz, Austria to study a unique application of Enerpulse's Nano-Plasma Assisted Combustion (n-PAC™) technology to reduce tailpipe emissions during the engine cold-start phase.
"It was exciting to work with my colleagues at Texas A&M and AVL on this very important technical paper," said Camilli. "Our study focused on the use of n-PAC technology found in our plugs to maintain combustion stability while employing an extremely retarded ignition strategy during initial engine start-up. This strategy, which cannot be reliably employed with conventional spark plugs, increases heat transfer (enthalpy) to the vehicle's catalytic converter; thus, reducing the time required to get its catalytic converter to operating temperature, a key factor in reducing exhaust emissions. The fact that this peer-reviewed paper was accepted for publication and presentation by the Society of Automotive Engineers at one of their international conferences is a great honor in and of itself."
Camilli says he's looking forward to presenting the information and getting feedback from attendees about the application of Enerpulse's n-PACtm technology to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions.
The SAE International Powertrain, Fuels & Lubricants Meeting is designed to help attendees stay connected with the future of powertrain, fuels and lubricants technologies, network with peers, discuss new and emerging technologies, and meet recognized technology experts.
