New Nobel Prize Category For Over 40 Years To Be Announced At nanoTX'07 Nanotechnology Conference

The organizers of nanoTX’07, the world’s most comprehensive nanotechnology conference & exposition and the Nobel Charitable Trust jointly gave notice today that Dr. Michael Nobel will announce at nanoTX’07 the establishment of the first new award associated with the Nobel Family name since the Nobel Prize in Economics was established in 1968.  The specific challenge area that the award addresses is embargoed at this time, but will be revealed during the opening night Nobel Laureates Reception at nanoTX’07 on October 2, 2007.  Dr. Nobel will be the featured keynote presenter at the opening reception, an invitation-only event.  The conference & exhibition is open to the general public.

nanoTX’07, presented this year by the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) advances in nanoscience, explains how nanotechnology is being used today and how it will impact a broad range of industries tomorrow, including: electronics, energy, aerospace, defense, biomedicine, robotics, chemicals and more.

The Dr. Michael Nobel Award will be presented to individuals and organizations in four categories:

  • Scientists or institutions that have made important discoveries that directly impact and advance the development of solutions to the challenge.
  • Corporate leaders or companies that have demonstrated successful efforts in finding new solutions.
  • Political leaders who have distinguished themselves by implementing policy actions that have or will have a significant impact on solving the challenge.
  • Celebrities who, by using their positions as public figures and opinion leaders, have substantially helped influence global public opinion toward the need for long-term solutions and short term remedies.

Winners will be presented at a Gala dinner broadcast globally.  The inaugural award recipients will be announced in early 2008.

“The economic and social health of our civilization as a whole directly depends upon finding solutions to the most important challenge of the 21st century,” said Dr. Nobel.  “This is why we are creating this new award and lending the credibility of the Nobel family name to its establishment.  It is critical that we build awareness and support for solutions to this challenge among all people of the world.  We felt that nanoTX’07 represented an outstanding opportunity to announce this award and reach the largest possible international audience.”

Peter Balbus, Director of Grants and Awards for nanoTX’07 echoed Dr. Nobel’s sentiments.  “Our whole purpose at nanoTX’07 is to build global awareness of the key challenges of the 21st century and promote advances in technologies that promise long-term solutions – particularly those technologies where nanoscience offers particularly compelling opportunities for advancement.  We are indeed honored to have Dr. Nobel with us as a featured keynote speaker at nanoTX’07 and feel privileged to be able to support him and the Noble Charitable Trust in this critical effort.”
