IOP Publishing congratulates the 2007 Nobel Prize winners in physics and chemistry. IOP is honored to have had this year’s winners publish work in several of our journals. The 2007 Nobel Prize for Physics was awarded to Albert Fert of Université Paris-Sud in Orsay, France and Peter Grünberg of Forschungszentrum in Jülich, Germany for their independent work on Giant Magnetoresistance (GMR). The work carried out by Fert and Grünberg has revolutionized and influenced the path for modern technology thus making storage devices such as MP3 players and laptops smaller in weight and appearance, yet larger in storage capacity.
The 2007 Nobel Prize for Chemistry was awarded to Gerhard Ertl of Fritz-Haber-Institut der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft in Berlin, Germany for his experimental investigations into the various effects of reactions taking place on surfaces.
