New Testing Methods Can Help Optimize the Application of Nano-Composite Coatings for Automakers

Lightweight polycarbonate (PC) glazing technologies from SABIC Innovative Plastics' Exatec* organization can offer automakers solutions that reduce weight and can assist in reducing CO2 emissions and fuel consumption.

Nano-indentation technique used to optimize mechanical properties of various coatings (hardness and modulus).

Exatec has recently introduced new testing methods that can help to optimize the application of poly-siloxane nano-composite coatings which are used in combination with Lexan* polycarbonate to enhance its ability to withstand long-term weathering in automotive environments. The correct application of these wet-coat systems is important to ensure the lightweight glazing components retain their clarity for the life of the vehicle.

Using an innovative nano-indentation measurement system that can measure the mechanical properties including hardness and modulus of the coatings at different microscopic depths from the surface (as shown in the chart above), Exatec has introduced a system that relates the coating application process to the performance of the final coating. This will assist glazing manufacturers and automakers to optimize their production processes for Lexan polycarbonate glazing.
