Nanotechnology Company Wins Wall Street Journal 2009 Technology Innovation Award

QD Vision, a quantum dot product company that delivers highly differentiated lighting and display solutions to major industries where color, power and design matter, today announced it has won the prestigious Wall Street Journal 2009 Technology Innovation Award in the Materials and other Base Technology category.

In its article announcing the 9th annual Technology Innovation Award winners, The Wall Street Journal wrote that it selected QD Vision for “inventing a way to dramatically improve the color quality of LED lights by using quantum dots—tiny semiconducting nanocrystals. QD Vision quantum dots can also be used to make energy-efficient flat-panel displays that can deliver purer, more intense colors.”

The WSJ also explained the problem QD Vision has solved:

“Light fixtures based on light-emitting diodes—semiconductors that glow brightly when charged—promise long-lasting, low-energy illumination. But there's a problem: The light produced is harsh and bluish in color. Special filters can be added to produce warmer tones, but they can make the fixtures less efficient. Devising a way to make warmer-colored, high-efficiency LEDs is seen as essential to their widespread adoption.”

QD Vision announced its first product earlier this year &ndash a Quantum Light™ optic for a new LED lamp developed by Nexxus Lighting that combines the warmth and color of incandescent bulbs with the full efficiency of LED technology. The company’s Quantum LightTM product line enables major improvements in color quality, brightness and efficiency for solid state lighting and displays, while reducing overall system costs. The Nexxus LED lamp incorporating the Quantum Light™ optic from QD Vision will be commercially available in early 2010.

“Winning this award is truly an honor for QD Vision and provides a great springboard as we aggressively move into the lighting and display markets,” said Dr. Dan Button, President and CEO of QD Vision. “We are seeing tremendous interest in our Quantum LightTM product platform and this award will shine a bright spotlight on the breakthroughs we have achieved to deliver exceptional color quality without sacrificing high power efficiencies, and to realize significant cost savings across the value chain.”
